If you're applying for a US nonimmigrant visa, you upload a digital photo as part of the DS-160 form. It has stricter file rules than a printed photo. Get them wrong and the upload fails, or your photo gets flagged at the interview.
The digital file rules
Your DS-160 photo must be:
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Shape | Square. Height equals width. |
| Size | At least 600 x 600 pixels, no more than 1200 x 1200 pixels |
| File type | JPEG (.jpg) |
| File size | 240 kB or less |
| Color | Full color, sRGB |
| Compression | 20:1 or less |
The 240 kB limit catches a lot of people. A photo straight off a modern phone is several megabytes. It needs to be cropped and resized before it will upload.
The framing rules
- Head size: 50% to 69% of the image height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
- Eye height: For a printed 2x2 visa photo, your eyes should sit 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom of the photo.
- Centered, facing the camera directly, full face visible.
The appearance rules
These match the passport rules, with a few visa-specific points:
- Taken in the last six months.
- Plain white or off-white background.
- Neutral expression, both eyes open.
- No glasses. They're only allowed in rare medical cases, with a signed statement from a medical professional.
- No hat or head covering that hides your hair or hairline, unless you wear it daily for religious reasons. Your full face must show, with no shadows.
- No headphones or wireless earpieces. Hearing aids you normally wear are fine.
- No uniforms. Wear what you normally wear day to day.
Can I take it with my phone?
Yes, if the photo is sharp and well lit. The State Department rejects low-quality phone photos, so quality is the issue, not the phone itself.
- Stand in front of a plain white wall, facing a window.
- Prop your phone at eye level, about 4 feet away. Use the timer or ask someone to take it.
- Don't use a filter, beauty mode or portrait mode.
- Keep the original file. Don't send it to yourself by text message, which compresses it.

Check it and download the file
Pick Visa at the top of the checker. It measures head size and eye height against the visa rules and flags anything that needs a retake. Your photo is checked on your device and never uploaded.
The digital download is a 600 x 600 JPEG, ready for the DS-160.
Do I also need a printed photo?
Some US embassies and consulates ask you to bring one printed photo to the interview. Check the instructions from the embassy where you're applying. If you need one, download the 4x6 print sheet and print it at a photo kiosk.
Immigrant visa (DS-260) applicants must bring two identical printed 2x2 photos to the interview.
Your questions, answered
My upload keeps failing. Why?
Usually the file is too big or not square. Check it's a JPEG, exactly square, between 600 and 1200 pixels, and 240 kB or less.
Can I use my passport photo for my visa?
Only if it was taken in the last six months and meets the visa rules. Don't scan a photo from your passport or another ID. That's not accepted.
Can I remove the background with an app?
No. Photos must not be digitally altered. Take the photo against a plain white wall instead.
Who decides if my photo is accepted?
The US embassy or consulate where you apply. A checker can catch common problems, but the final call is theirs.
Rules change. Check the State Department's visa photo requirements before you submit.

Can FormFitPhoto guarantee acceptance?
No. It flags common issues and helps you prepare; the issuing office makes the final decision.
Does the checker upload my photo?
No. The photo is processed in your browser and is not sent to FormFitPhoto.
